When we talk about Hilton Head we are really referring to Hilton Head Island. Hilton Head Island is located in the extreme southeast corner of the state of South Carolina. The island provides 12 miles of beach and as most Americans know, it is a very popular vacation destination. A 2000 census indicated a year round population of 33,862 but Hilton Head population typically swells to around 275,000 during the summer months.
While many people think of the word expensive when asked what they know about Hilton Head, there is in fact many lower cost economy rentals, as well as expensive rentals for the individual who is thinking about a vacation to the island. From the luxurious ocean front home to the simplified economy rental, there is a very wide choice of rentals to fit your budget. For those thinking about the purchase of real estate on Hilton Head, you can select from multi-million dollar homes to relatively lower cost condos or townhomes.
Activities are plentiful on the island. These include but are not limited to golf, tennis, swimming, bicycling, horseback riding, fishing, and an assortment of water sports. The type of people who visit Hilton Head range from honeymooners to families on summer vacation, to those who simply want a weekend getaway.
On Hilton Head, there are a number of ordinances in place to control development, and development that does take place must occur under certain restrictions. The people who reside on Hilton Head have made it very clear that they want the area to keep it’s southern charm. For example, road signs for the many hotels and resorts on the island are restricted in terms of their size, so if you are a vacationer heading toward Hilton Head, make sure you have good directions and a good map so that you can find your destination.
On Hilton Head during the month of July expect an average high of 90F and a average low temperature of 72F. During January expect an average high of 60F and a average low around 38F. The most precipitation occurs in August at 8.9 inches, and the driest month is the month of November at 2.4 inches. Weather extremes on the island are fairly rare, but an eye should occasionally be raised toward the southeast during the hurricane season.
If you view a satellite image of the island, it is in the perfect shape of a shoe. Hilton Head Island is actually the second largest barrier island on the Eastern Seaboard, second only to Long Island. The island itself is made up of 55 square miles, but of that only 44 square miles is actual land. The rest is marshland.
Should you vacation or move to Hilton Head? If you want to move to Hilton Head Island, or close by, you may want to work in the tourist or real estate industry, or you may want to retire on Hilton Head Island. Oh, and by the way, if you retire to Hilton Head Island and you like golf, Hilton Head is the ideal location. The Hilton Head Island area is one of the nation’s foremost golf meccas. Is it any wonder that Golf Digest readers named Hilton Head Island Number 10 on its list of the world’s best golf resorts? Hilton Head Island also has it’s own airport, which increases it’s accessibility.
In terms of vacationing, if you talk to the experts who study these sort of things, it really depends on who you ask. Lets take a look at some opinions by some “traveling experts”. More specifically, lets take an unbiased look at Hilton Head by noting some of the lists that Hilton Head has been placed on.
Being on a list is an expression of an opinion or opinions about a location, and provides to you a perspective which you really can not get from statistics. Some believe that development on Hilton Head Island is occurring to rapidly, and even though development and the way development takes place is tightly controlled, development may be a problem in the future for Hilton Head. Local government officials are trying their best to control the development, but some feel that the controls do not go far enough. All I know is that it is one of the few places in the United States where you can drive by a Wal-mart, and not even know it is there.
In any case, Hilton Head Island landed near the bottom of a ranking of 111 islands in the November/December 2007 issue of National Geographic Traveler magazine, simply because the panelists felt that the development on the island is degrading the natural charm of the island. But the fact of the matter is, vacationers and retirees still want stores to shop at and do not want the inconvenience of traveling a long distance to do some substantial shopping. What the panelists feel is a degradation of the charm of the island, can be appealing to many vacationers and retirees. After all, you can only stare at the ocean for so long and most vacationers and retirees would like to have options in terms of things to do. To have choices means there needs to be some development.
On the other hand, Hilton Head made the top 10 list for U.S. beaches on www.womansday.com and the top 10 family beaches for www.shermanstravel.com this year, according to the chamber of commerce. Because Hilton Head provides natural beauty with a variety of things to do on the island, this is exactly what makes it a popular vacation destination. So while the opinion from the National Geographic Traveler magazine may be some what less then flattering, many other experts feel that it is an ideal vacation spot and an ideal location to retire.
Most likely the panelists of National Geographic Traveler prefer the more wild and less touched by man type of destinations, which is fine for many people, but is this the type of place you want to have a family vacation, or even retire. Natural beauty yes, but with fewer conveniences I would say no. Number one on their list was the Faroe Islands of Denmark, a group of islands in Northern Europe, between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, which is inconvenient in terms of just getting there. Families on vacation need variety and some conveniences, and even more so, retirees need the same conveniences. Hilton Head Island appears to fit this bill. After all the purpose of a vacation or to retire is to relax. Hilton Head as it is today, is an ideal family vacation destination and an ideal location for retirement.
The following is our set of directories which should be useful for any one who is considering the purchase of real estate on the island, or if are thinking about vacationing on the island. This is just a sampling in terms of what is available with regards to real estate, rentals, and hotels.

Hilton Head - Conclusion
If you are seeking to purchase real estate, looking for a great destination for a vacation, or need an ideal place to retire, you really can not go wrong with Hilton Head. It is easily accessed by the Interstate highway system, it provides a variety of activities for the vacationer, and provides a place of retreat and solitude for the retiree. For the vacationer, there is a large price range in terms of accommodations and there is a variety of activities available on the Island. If you are looking for a place to relax, Hilton Head Island should meet that requirement.
While some feel that development may some day take away from the charm and beauty of the island, local ordinances are in place which are intended to limit the growth. The town has even spent more than $141 million to preserve more than 1,000 acres from development through its land-buying program. Only time will tell what will happen to Hilton Head in terms of development, but today it is one of the most desirable vacation destinations and many people are currently enjoying their retirement there. So go to Hilton Head, enjoy the variety of activities and natural beauty, and you decide if it truly is one of the premiere vacation and retirement destinations in the United States.
